Real-ity hits Tottenham

by admin

Well it was fun while it lasted. From Bales’ rampaging against Inter, to the team’s steadfast determination to hold on against AC Milan, only the bitterest of Arsenal fans could have failed to be excited by the way that Tottenham Hotspur have set about their debut Champions League campaign. However, last night, Real Madrid have proved just too big a hurdle to overcome.

It started horribly, when four minutes in former Arsenal striker Emanuel Adebayor was not marked properly and headed it past the unbalanced Luka Modric on the line. The decisive moment  though came ten minutes later. Peter Crouch was rightly dismissed for two yellow cards, and only has himself to blame. Crouch had first been been booked for a clumsy, late, challenge. He then saw Adebayor booked for a similar offence. There is then simply no excuse for him repeating the challenge, the minute he went to ground for the second time there was only going to be one outcome. Quite simply, Crouch let his team down.

That is not to say that with a full compliment Tottenham would have got anything from the game, Real Madrid were clearly superior, but they may just have been able to keep the tie alive. Crouch’s irresponsibility made a difficult task impossible.

Crouch’s idiocy aside, Tottenham didn’t help themselves. There are plenty of ways to lose to Real Madrid, allowing Adebayor two free headers is not good enough. They also failed to score again, and looked utterly bereft of any creative ideas save for trying to get Bale in round the back of a classy Madrid defence. A stunning goal by Angel Di Maria and a sharp finish from Christiano Ronaldo means that Real Madrid only have to go through the motions at White Hart Lane next week.  The Tottenham fans singing ’5-0, we’re gonna win 5-0, at the airport,’ just about summed out what an unachievable aim the team have been left with.

Looking back, Tottenham should view this Champions League campaign with a lot of pride. Their focus now must be on making sure they can repeat the experience next year.

Champions League preview – will Britania rule?

by admin
Champions' League logo

This week is another huge one for British teams in the Champions League, but how will North London neighbours Arsenal and Spurs fare against their high profile opposition?

Barcelona (1) vs Arsenal (2)

Arsenal’s victory in the first leg was deeply impressive, but Barca still have a vital away goal, and surely can’t perform as badly at the Camp Nou as they did at the Emirates. With the best midfield duo in the world in Xavi and Iniesta supplying ammo for Messi, Pedro and Villa, you just can’t see that Arsenal defence holding out. However, Arsenal will undoubtedly be buoyed by the news that Robin Van Persie and the ever impressive Jack Wilshere will be fit enough to take part, and will be fired up by a save our season attitude after some poor recent results. Of course they also have the luxury of being in the lead and not having to come flying out the traps, meaning they don’t have to take risks. Beating Barcelona twice would be an almost unprecedented achievement, and one that is hard to imagine Arsenal doing. A draw is though not inconceivable, nor a a narrow defeat that would see Arsenal scrap though, but the truth is that if Barcelona play at their best, nobody can stop them.

Prediction: Barcelona 3 – Arsenal 1 (Barcelona to qualify 4-3 on aggregate)

Tottenham Hotspur (1) vs AC Milan (0)

Tottenham’s outstanding performance in the San Siro puts them in the lead, as they welcome the red half of Milan to White Hart Lane. They  do though need to remember the job is nowhere near done. Clearly they can compete with Milan, Piennar and Palacios won the battle in the first tie, and Modric and Lennon’s pace and skill troubled an ageing defence. However, one moment of lost concentration could undo all the good work, with Ibrahimovic always a goal threat. Given that this is the team that has conceded six goals against Blackpool and Wolves in two games, Spurs are clearly going to have to score again. The return of Bale to help conduct wide raids down the wings with Lennon, and the improving fitness of dutch master  Rafa Van Der Vaart should help, but they have to work back. No skipper Gattusso for the visitors after his booking at the San Siro, and ex-Arsenal player Flamini should receive an interesting reception after his first-leg horror tackle, on promises to be a high octane night at the Lane.

Prediction: Spurs 1 – AC Milan 1 (Spurs to qualify 2-1 on aggregate)

Premier League preview-Is this the title deciding weekend?

by admin

Following the record breaking weekend that graced the Premier League only days ago, Saturday’s action has a lot to live up to. However, with a Manchester derby and a game at The Hawthorns that could have a vital say in deciding who will get relegated, there is much to look forward to.
The action kicks off just after midday at Old Trafford where the red devils take on the ‘noisy neighbours’ from across the city. Until last weekend, United were unbeaten and looked to be cruising to the title. However, a shock defeat at Wolves has cast a small element of doubt over the United’s ability to continue their impressive form. The defeat at Wolves can hit Ferguson’s men in one of two ways this weekend. For United, either the loss was a timely reminder that United need to maintain their ruthless streak, which can be put straight this weekend with a convincing win over City, or the defeat has shocked the United invincibles and defeat at the hands of the blue half of Manchester could really open up the title race.
Ancelotti has ruled Chelsea out of the title hunt, and Arsenal are unable to put a consistent run of form together. This was typified by the amazing comeback that Newcastle managed produce from four goals down against The Gunners last weekend. City meanwhile are adamant that their attentions are focused on gaining Champions League qualification. However, the impact this derby game can have on the remainder of the season could be significant. If United win, the race will be between Arsenal and United, with United clear favourites. However, defeat by City and a win for Arsenal would lower the gap to only one point, and with United having to play Chelsea twice in the remaining games a few question marks can be placed against the certainty of the title heading to Old Trafford again this season.
The derby itself should be a fiery affair. The return of Tevez to Old Trafford always adds an extra level of excitement to the clash, while Ferdinand is out for the reds, and there is uncertainty surrounding De Jong’s fitness for City, both of whom are key players. Mancini was criticised for only going for the draw in the last league derby, and this will be a real test of character for the Italian in determining where his side’s fortunes really lie this season.
Elsewhere, Arsenal will look to set the record straight from their collapse at Newcastle with a convincing victory over Wolves, who remain in the bottom three. Van Persie has begun to show brilliant form, while Walcott is also getting the goals. However, The Gunners still look shaky at the back, while Wolves continue to do well against the bigger sides.
West Brom host West Ham in the battle against relegation. The Baggies have appointed Roy Hodgson as their new manager, which will give them hope of maintaining their status in the league, while West Ham have had good news themselves this week as they have won the rights ahead of Spurs to move into the Olympic Stadium. Both sides are craving the points, and a win for West Brom would put clear daylight between themselves and the opponents at the foot of the league.
Birmingham welcome Stoke to St Andrews, with The Potters chasing the points to consolidate their mid-table position. Stoke came from behind to win last weekend with Huth grabbing the goals, while Zigic is beginning to show signs of justifying his heavy price tag for Birmingham.
Blackburn host Newcastle, who have replaced their former striker Andy Carroll with thirty four year old Shefki Kuqi. Kuqi left Swansea by mutual consent in January, and it will be interesting to see how the fans react to such a signing. Blackburn will be looking to extend their recent good form, but will face a tough task in doing so against a side on a high after their comeback next weekend.
Aston Villa travel to Blackpool who conceded five against Everton last weekend. Villa will welcome the return of England goalscorers Bent and Young as they look to climb the way up the league to a more respectable league position. Blackpool need four more wins in order to stay in the league, and always have goals within their side, but currently face a goalkeeping crisis, with stories suggesting that James Beattie may have to go in goal.
On Merseyside, Liverpool welcome Wigan to Anfield. After a memorable win last Sunday against Chelsea, Dalglish will want his side to kick on against sides such as Wigan in order to further heighten his credentials of becoming manager on a full time basis. Suarez could get the nod to start, while Wigan will hope to continue their fairly good run of results that they appear to get against Liverpool.
The evening kick off promises goals as Tottenham go to Sunderland. Spurs grabbed a vital winner in the dying moments of their game against Bolton, which maintains their pursuit of the top four. Sunderland meanwhile will hope to continue their own push for European qualification as they turn to Gyan as the main man to get the goals in the absence of Bent.
On Sunday, Everton take on Bolton at The Reebok with Saha in brilliant form. Bolton have struggled for wins this calendar year after a fantastic start to the season. Recent signing Sturridge has grabbed vital goals already under Coyle’s management and could force his way into the starting line up as he looks to enhance his reputation.
Finally, the weekend’s action is rounded up with Chelsea travelling the short distance to Fulham. Ancelotti appears to have stopped the rot that threatened to ruin Chelsea’s season and with signings Torres and Luiz set to make a real impact, Chelsea could yet have a lot to say this season.

West Ham beat Spurs in bid for Olympic Stadium

by admin

The Olympic Park Legacy Company have chosen West Ham United to inherit the Olympic Stadium after the 2012 games. The news has been greeted positively by West Ham, and also Spurs fans who had opposed the move.

The decision seems to make sense, in that West Ham are an East London club who will move into an East London stadium. They have also said that they will preserve the athletic tracks around the pitch, although Italy demonstrates that this rarely adds anything to the football fan’s experience, and will almost certainly mean a dilution of the intimidating Irons atmosphere. There had been mounting pressure on OPLC to back West Ham not Spurs, as Spurs had wanted to knock down most of the Olympic Stadium and rebuild, as well as develop Chrystal Palace as an athletics stadium. However, their bid was self funding, while West Ham’s will rely on a Government grant being bid for by Newham Council.

It is thought that Tottenham are considering a Judicial Review into the decision, after the result was leaked last night. They may claim that it is illegal under European law for a football club to be tax payer funded. Given the general level of opposition from Spurs fans to the move though, Chairman Daniel Levy should quietly let OPLC do him a favour and accept the decision.  He should instead focus his efforts on putting additional pressure on David Lammy MP and Haringey Council to get the Northumberland Park Project up and running again.

Sunderland make signing of the transfer window, as David Miliband joins the club

by admin
DAVOS/SWITZERLAND, 29JAN10 - David Miliband, S...

Image via Wikipedia

David Miliband has joined the board of Sunderland as a Vice Chairman, the club have announced. He is there to use his international links and profile to boost the clubs standing, and will be paid around £50,000 a year for the role. Sunderland Chairman Niall Quinn is delighted with his new signing:

“As a former Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs with worldwide knowledge and links, he can also help us become better known around the world as we look to grow and develop the club on an international stage.”

Miliband’s South Shield’s constituency is only eight miles from the club, so it is arguable that he is doing something relevant to his local community, although his loose ties to football are said to revolve around Arsenal.

Since losing the Labor leadership to his younger brother, Mr. Miliband seems to have taken his role as a constituency MP as an inconvenience to furthering his career. He did though manage to pop up in Parliament to give an impressive performance in the NHS debate. This further embarrassed his under pressure sibling, as many Labour MPs and members would rather David, not Ed, was leading the party. In recent months, David Miliband has submitted television programme ideas to the BBC, set up ‘The Office of David Miliband’ company, and will also take on a voluntary teach role in his old school in North London.

Perhaps the people of South Shield would prefer it if he just got on with his day job of representing them.

Champions League?We’re having a laugh.

by admin

>

It has taken me a couple of days to write this post because on Wednesday/Thursday I was too angry to type coherently. After failing to beat both Birmingham City (despite being ahead in the 91st minute) and Aston Villa (despite dominating for much of the game), Spurs completed a miserable round of matches against  the 2nd city clubs by capitulating to a first half Wolves goal. Again. Quite obviously this is not the form of a team ready to compete with the best club sides in Europe. When these result are put in the context of losing to Stoke, throwing a 2 goal lead away against Everton, drawing at home against Hull and a pathetic performance at Anfield a worrying trend has emerged. As well as the results, it is a collection of performances that will stop Tottenham making the breakthrough. Consistently, Tottenham batter teams in terms of possession and chances but fail to kill off their opposition.

Before I write the next sentence I would like to make it clear that I love Harry Redknapp and he has been great for Spurs. However, I am beginning to worry that there is a lack of killer instinct from the top of the club, that Redknapp is at a bigger club than ever before, with more money and better players than ever before and he is having a bit of nosebleed. THIS IS NOT THE START OF A HARRY OUT CAMPAIGN. He is a top quality man manager who has improved this set of players immeasurably (see Bale, BAE, Bentley, Lennon) and made top signings (see Palacios, Corluka, Krancjar, Crouch). The recent home performance against Villa typified the problem. For the second time this season against us Villa were hanging on for dear life. On the bench were Krancjar and Gudjohnson, on the field were Bentley and Modric who were not having a good afternoon but no change came. There was no killer instinct, no bravery to get a goal and finish the game. I haven’t even mentioned us turning up at Old Trafford and the Emirates and simply laying down and dieing yet.

The collapse against Wolves just about sums it all up. Its time for a change of mentality.Time to believe our own hype and start killing off the teams around us, otherwise we can look forward to watching Manchester City in the Champions League next season.

Superbowl XVI

by admin

>

In a few hours the ‘biggest sports event in the word’ (TM) is going to kick off. Now while I can assure you that American Football will not be a regular feature on this new blog, (welcome by the way,) it seemed as good an event as any to start off with. I like other US sports, but I am not really an American Football fan. I don’t really understand a sport that is designed for TV viewing and stops every 10 seconds. However, something about the Superbowl lures me in every year. Clearly this is because it is a global television event and a great spectacle. I certainly don’t watch it because I understand what the hell is going on!

This year there is something else though. Five years ago, for a few awful weeks, an American football stadium became the focus of the world. The New Orleans Superdome ended up housing the city, not just its football team. Those images of homeless and ruined families live long in the memory, but tonight the New Orleans Saints can give the awful story of Hurricane Katrina a slightly happier ending. Nobody is pretending that winning a sports event will help rebuild the lives that were ruined, bring people back their houses, or return dead loved ones to their families, but victory for sports teams brings massive pride to the community the team represent. It can uplift a city, and what American city deserves to be lifted up more than the one the Government forget as it was nearly raised to ground?
