“Hello self-righteous moral high ground, we’re the Lib Dems, remember us?”

by admin

It hasn’t been easy being a Liberal Democrat in recent months. Being told you sold out your principles, when nobody ever bothered to actually find out what they were in the first place, has become rather grating after nearly 13 months. But it’s ok – phone hacking has returned us to our rightful place on the moral high-ground, happily pointing and saying “we told you so,” (because we actually did!)

For the moment, we can watch smugly as Deputy Leader Simon Hughes promises to march into the OfCom offices (he’ll obviously be a bit late, but he’s on his way, and that’s what counts,) and demand a pause in the News Corp/BSkyB takeover. Nick Clegg can once again rage against the machine (well, send a strongly worded e-mail to party members).

It may be because New International weren’t that interested in the Lib Dems, but it is certainly true that the party have not courted or been courted by the Murdochs or Brooks in the same manner as the other two parties. The Labservative status quo has once again come to fore.

As is so often the case, Party President Tim Farron summed it up perfectly when he tweeted: “I’m rather proud to be President of the only party that has never sucked up to or been backed by News International”.

So there.
