Dear Baroness Warsi

by admin

Dear Baroness Warsi,

I read with interest your piece in the Sun today, claiming that a ‘Yes’ vote in the AV Referendum would help the BNP. I am Jewish and, like you, detest everything that the BNP stand for. For that reason, if I genuinely believed a ‘Yes’ vote would  help such a vile group I would not be actively supporting the ‘Yes’ campaign.

While your example of Dewsbury is troubling, as far as I can tell it does not prove in anyway that the BNP would have won that seat under AV. Thankfully, I still have not seen a clear example of where the BNP could or would have actually won a seat under AV. Extremists are called extremists for a reason. People vote for fascists because they want to see fascists elected. The concept of anyone voting for a mainstream party first, then giving a second preference to the BNP is bordering on the absurd.

If you have such strong concerns about the BNP gaining influence, I urge you as Chairman of your party to lead your candidates into standing strong against their aim of dividing and inflaming communities, and not to be influenced by them.

As for AV helping extremists gain legitimacy, after you were brave enough to take on Nick Griffin on live television you know better than most that as soon as the BNP face any real scrutiny they are exposed for exactly what they are. Which parties do you seriously see wishing to take on any aspect of their ill thought out, racist policies? The BNP are defeated by strong communities, who stand together against their lies, not by people offering watered-down versions of their manifesto.

Baroness, the truth is that the most likely route for the BNP to gain a parliamentary seat is by sneaking in on a low threshold, in a community where there is a low turn out.

I understand why you really want a no vote, and respect your right to campaign for one. Please though set out your case for First Post the Post, don’t cloud the issue and give extremists more credit than we both know they deserve.

Kind regards,

Charlotte Henry

Gang of nine at Yes2AV press launch

by admin

VN has got a bit lost with the amount of launches there have been for various groups associated with the fairer votes referendum, but today was the official Yes team’s press launch. The gang of nine that came on stage featured Leader of the Opposition Ed Miliband, Lib Dem Party President Tim Farron, Leader of the Green Party Caroline Lucas, former Lib Dem Lead Charles Kennedy, and Lib Dem peer Baroness Shirley Williams.

As one might expect, Miliband couldn’t resist having a few pops at the government, but it was generally a good humoured, collegiate, event. This was typified when Lucas made reference to ending “x can’t win here” leaflets, which was greet by chuckles and teasing looks towards the Lib Dem panellists. All very good natured.

The panel used their remarks to develop the key theme of seizing the opportunity that the referendum offers, not worrying about what is not on offer this time. People will try and trip the Yes team up about backing a “miserable little compromise” (VN is so over that quote already,) but they know that, as Caroline Lucas put it, “the best must not be the enemy of the good”.

Tim Farron closed proceedings with a typically barnstorming performance, but VN was most taken with the Green Party Leader. Quietly impressive, Caroline Lucas didn’t go in for the macho posturing of her male counterparts, and clearly set out why a Yes was a fair and right change.

There was, of course, a Nick Clegg shaped elephant in the room that the journalists set about pointing out with glee. The Deputy Prime Minister is currently in South America, but his lack of presence is becoming a focus for No campaigners, there was even a group of Labour No types outside in Clegg masks. It is clear that he and Miliband need to lance the boil and share a platform, both to stop embarrassment for a campaign they both support, and also to show that Yes in not embarrassed by the man who secured their referendum.

VN also agrees with some others that Yes to AV missed a trick by not having UKIP leader Nigel Farage at the event today, or indeed as a prominent campaign member. His presence would clearly outline the wide range of views that back a Yes vote, and stop it being wrongly dismiss as a lefty love-in.

All in all though, a good start to formal proceedings from the Yes team.

VN will have videos of the speakers a bit later.

Which Labour MPs irritates you the most?

by admin

Facebook seems to be filling our NewsFeeds’ with normally inane ‘Facebook Questions’.  VN hasn’t answered any yet, but this one did raise a chuckle:

For the record we’re stuck between Chris Bryant and Ed Balls. Also, Kerry McCarthy must be worth a place on the list too?

Should the Mansion Tax have stayed in the attic?

by admin

Vince Cable couldn’t quite resist. Having somehow survived declaring war on Rupert Murdoch, he chose the weekend after the budget to relaunch his Mansion Tax pet project, on FiveLive’s Pienaar’s Politics programme.

There are groups who put forward coherent arguments for taxing land like, or instead, of wealth. Agree with it or not, the idea has already caused Cable and the party embarrassment pre-election, and is unlikely to implemented under a Conservative chancellor. This is particularly the case with the threshold for  the tax coming set at properties worth £1 million  (it sounds a lot, but just because your property is worth that much it doesn’t necessarily mean you have a large amount of liquid cash.)

Why, then, has the Business Secretary picked a fight he can’t win? Is it just another crude attempt to make some wavering Lib Dems feel better?

There are many Liberal Democrat policies that Cable can help implement as a key figure in the government (tuition fees accepted), but he weakens and demeans himself by starting unwinnable wars.

The Lib Dem rebrand – tipping the scales of nonsense stories

by admin

The Daily Telegraph seem to have been trying to push the Lib Dems out of Government from the get go.  Perhaps the budget earlier in the week was just too Lib Dem for the paper, who knows, but today’s rebrand rumours mark a new level of nonsense.

The paper claims that “the rebranding exercise due to get under way next month will involve a total rethink of the party’s direction and could even include changing the name and logo”. Except VN has learned there is no rebrand underway, at all.

It seems to VN that the story is designed to do nothing more than overplay the discomfort of some elements of the party, hence the Telegraph’s citing of the SDP in their claim that the super-new-rebranded-not-Liberal-Democrats will have “Social” in their title. It is, as Nick Clegg might put it, “utter bilge”.

While we are on the subject of Nick Clegg and the supposed hordes of people lining up to take over from him, could the Daily Telegraph have not come up with a better successor-in-waiting than previous leadership contendor Chris Huhne? Huhne is relatively young, and of course would be a highly credible party leader someday, but if you think that coups are his game you very misinformed. He has been highly professional and extremely loyal, to both the party and the man who defeated him, since the leadership election. The trust between him and Clegg was evident when Huhne was part of the coalition negotiation team, and remember, it was he who wrote the minority report of one first advocating full coalition with the Conservatives.

Obviously the Liberal Democrats and Clegg want to secure a ‘Yes’ vote in the fairer votes referendum, and obviously they want an improvement in poll ratings, preferably before the local elections. It is also no secret that both coalition parties are prepared to take ownership of it’s agenda, but also want to maintain their own parties independent identity. The Liberal Democrat’s are having to consider how to brand themselves now that they are a party of government, but that is as far as it goes. The full rebrand is a complete non-starter.

March 26 PR mess for Red Ed

by admin

It can’t be easy being Ed Miliband, having to propose an alternative when all you’ve got is a blank bit of paper to wave around. But opportunity knocks, and Ed is a top class opportunist. Today there is a large ‘anti-cuts’ march in London, and Miliband leapt at the chance to join his union paymasters on the stage. After they secured him the leadership getting up on Saturday afternoon is the least he could do for them.

However, it didn’t quite go to plan. As Ed took to the stage, anarchists descended on Oxford Street, throwing paint bombs and smashing windows at Top Shop. Reports of lightbulbs filled with ammonia being thrown at police officers have also emerged. Not missing a beat Sky (and the BBC,) split their screen, resulting in Ed Miliband soundtracking the violence. That is, until they got bored, cut away from the speech, leaving Ed preaching to the choir in Hyde Park.

Not quite the coverage Ed had in mind…

The perils of leaving a microphone on

by admin

SkyNews are feeling nice and proud of themselves this afternoon after their microphone picked up Nick Clegg talking to David Cameron after a joint press conference. Clegg was heard saying to Cameron “If we keep doing this we won’t have anything to bloody disagree with on the TV debates!” Shock horror, they get on. Double shock, they are working on a shared agenda they agree on.

To be fair It must be hard for the media to cope with all this harmony at the top of government after 13 years of Labour plotting and infighting, but really, these stories are pathetic. Anyway, it is going to take a long while before this microphone nasty is beaten:

The ‘bigotgate’ incident was also a caused by a SkyNews microphone. Pure coincidence, VN is sure. Maybe SkyNews should learn to turn their microphones off after a press conference. Or maybe they should just listen to Olly Grender, and  focus on proper stories.
